A record breaking 12 teams have entered into the 2008 edition of the AR Scott tens on Saturday with six premier teams, three social teams, two women’s teams and an Under-14 team who will play against the women’s teams.
The tournament continues to grow and develop and this year is no exception with the launch of the ‘Ladies Day’.
In keeping with the Ascot races and the world renowned ladies day in England, ladies are encouraged to wear their best hats and dresses from 3pm onwards.
Those in hats and dresses will receive free champagne in the club rooms and at 6:30pm the ‘Best Dressed’ competition will be judged with the winner receiving $100 worth of gift certificates to either Prime, Deckers or Abacus.
Many other special events are planned for the day including a bouncy castle, kids pool, food, drinks specials from Jacques Scott and face painting.
The day starts at 10am and concludes 15 games later at 5:30pm.
The tournament, of course, has risen from the ashes of Ivan, after all the Hurricane was a major part of everybody’s life which tested everybody’s spirits but like all strong foundations it was not long before the re-building began and that at the Rugby Club was spearheaded by AR Scott who just three months after the great storm sponsored the first ‘real rugby’ to be played on the pitch and with it the return of rugby to the Cayman Islands.
Now in its fifth year the AR Scott tens marks the end of the sevens season and the start of the regular XV a side CRFU season that commences on December the 6 with the return of the Challenge Cup.
Today sponsor Ron Arscott looks back fondly: ‘I believe we had three teams of ten that first year, after all many had left or been sent away by their employers to work overseas while the clean up began,’ he said.
‘Touch rugby had made its way back to what was left of the field but I missed the contact side of the game. I paid for the refreshments after the tournament and the lads provided me with the games I love. That was it really. Last year I think we had four teams so to have 12 this year is just what I was hoping would happen five years ago!
‘I still supply the refreshments and I hope that in years to come we will have even more teams to supply the entertainment.’
