Scuba greats to be honoured

The International Scuba Diving Hall of Fame announced at the Dive Equipment and Marketing Association trade show in the US that it will induct six extraordinary new members this coming January.

Joining the ranks of famous divers such as Jacques-Yves Cousteau, Gustav Dalla Valle, Sylvia A. Earle, and Bob Soto will be an important historical contributor, an avid photographer turned manufacturer, a celebrated divemaster, a photographer who named Stingray City, and two brothers with an invention that significantly improved underwater filming.

The celebration of these honourees began at DEMA and The Dinner and Induction Ceremony will be held on January 29 next year where these pioneers, artists and entrepreneurs will be formally inducted for their outstanding contributions to the sport.

The 2009 International Scuba Diving Hall of Fame honourees are: Kimiuo Aisek, Howard Rosenstein, Larry Smith, Geri Murphy and brothers George and J Earnest Williamson.

The Department of Tourism has worked in conjunction with ISDHF to develop a virtual museum and to display rare artefacts including: the Boutan housing replica from 1893 and his attempts at incredible underwater photography.

Also in the collection is a home-made Montgomery Ward, circa 1950, made from a Montgomery Ward pressure cooker, this an example of the ingenuity of early underwater photographers and film makers

There’s also a Nikonos II, a camera that hit the market in 1963 after Nikon bought the popular French made Calypso camera from La Spiroteqhnique.
