The 2009 local little league season is on the horizon and kids are already eager to play.
Last Saturday saw the first of three registration periods for the upcoming little league season.
The Field of Dreams facility, off Aspiration Drive in George Town, saw about 200 kids come to secure their spot between the lines from 9am-12noon.
The registration process consisted of kids filling out the relevant forms at the registration tables before heading out to the various fields for drills.
The drills consisted of testing the ability of the kids to perform numerous basics in the sport of baseball including throwing, hitting and fielding.
All four fields would be used for the registration process. Each field had specific drills that targeted certain age groups.
A plethora of coaches and volunteers, including flag football stand-out Jeff Wight, were on-hand to administer the drills and collect registration forms.
Among the more notable persons present were Cayman Islands Little League Program and Facilities Director Mia Karapita.
CILL President Stuart Knox was on-hand, helping kids register for the 2009 White Sox camp taking place in January.
The upcoming 2009 season is slated to start in mid-January and will be split into five sections and a total of seven age divisions.
The Tee-ball league will be aimed at players five and six years old. Teams consist of about 14 to 16 players with games being restricted to an hour. The division is also slated to not see score-keeping.
Up next is the minor league baseball section. It will consist of the Pony division for kids seven years of age and the Single A division for kids eight to nine years old.
Thereafter is the major league baseball section. That will consist of the Double A division for kids 10-12 years old and the Triple A division for kids ages 13-15.
From there is the senior league which will cater to kids age 16 and older.
There will also be a softball section for those who prefer their pitches thrown underhand. The sport will see two leagues in the junior division for kids 10-12 years old and the senior division for kids 13 years of age and older.
Saturday’s registration period is one of three scheduled for this month.
The next registration days will be Wednesday 19 November 5:30-8:30pm and Saturday 22 November from 9am to 12noon.
The Field of Dreams will be the site as usual. Parents are asked to ensure their kids are dressed in suitable clothes and that they bring a glove.
All children who come out to registration are guaranteed a spot on a team. Children will be notified in the coming weeks by a coach as to which team they will play on.
There is no cost associated with playing little league baseball or softball. The program is completely free and each player receives a free uniform.
Players will have to provide their own glove. Those can be purchased at any sports store on-island or at the CILL clubhouse.
The league currently has a glove blow-out sale with significantly reduced prices. The league is looking to clear out its stock for the coming season.
