Jamaicans here for knockout show

Amateur boxing makes its return to the Cayman Islands at the Lions Centre tonight with five bouts involving some of the most exciting fighters on these shore and perhaps champs of the future.

They will be international contests too, with three Jamaicans,- including one female – on the bill. The Jamaican woman, Felice Groves is facing Cayman’s Sarah Kidd.

The boxing night is organised by the Cayman Islands Boxing Association and features members of the Cayman Islands boxing team who recently fought in Jamaica together, with a Golden Gloves contender and a powerful super heavyweight.

James Burch, who is assisting the CIBA in organising the show, said: ‘It should be emphasised that the amateur bouts are real blockbusters. Kendall Ebanks and Jason Parchment could be matched with the Jamaicans and they are our future Olympians, I’m sure.

‘Oran Smith and Ronaldo Garcia are fast, heavy hitting super-heavy weights and Dariel Ebanks who is a skilled southpaw is fighting Terence Spencer who is competing in the Golden Gloves competition in the USA next year.

‘It will be an incredible night of boxing and we ask that people come out to support their local fighters and also to give their support to the boxers who are stepping up for the first time to raise money for their community.’

White collar boxing will also be making its debut on the night when a bunch of office workers will go toe to toe in the ring to raise money for the boxing association.

White collar boxing started in New York about 20 years ago when Wall St execs decided to box each other for fun and raise money for charity. It’s flourished all over America and Europe since.

Doors open 6.30 with the first bell 8pm.

All proceeds are going to the boxing association to help them continue to promote boxing in the community and provide another focus for the youth of Cayman to channel their energy into as well as keeping up the proud tradition of Cayman Islands boxing in the Caribbean and internationally.
