The fifth annual A.R. Scott Hurricane Tens took place on Saturday at the Rugby Club on South Sound.
The tournament has its roots in the post Ivan recovery of the club with the first edition of the event taking place a mere three months after Ivan, signalling the return of real rugby to the club.
Over the years the tournament has remained as a reminder of the resilience of the club and the game of rugby.
This year’s edition of the tournament was contested in three divisions, with five teams taking part in the Premier Division, three teams in the Social Division, and the Under 14s taking on the Women’s 1 and 2 in a Battle of the Sexes.
For those too young to enjoy the rugby there was also a jumping castle and other activities to keep young minds and hands occupied.
In the first game of the day a combined Buccaneers and Storm side, or BuccaStorm for short, took on the Iguanas in a Premier Division 1 clash. The strength of the combined side was too much for the Iguanas, as BuccaStorm ran out 32-14 winners.
Then it was the turn of the Pigs Trotters who took on the Academy side in a Premier Division 2 game. It was a closely contested affair, with the Pigs Trotters claimed a hard-fought 17-12 win.
In the first Social Division game Maples faced off against Remax in a well matched encounter. Remax managed to score two tries, but were undone by Maples’ three tries as Maples claimed the game 15-10.
In the first Battle of the Sexes, the Under 14s and the Women’s 1 contested a tough game as each team tried to impose their style of play on the game.
The agility and speed of the Under 14’s seemed to present a challenge to the Women, while on their part they used their experience and strength to their advantage.
However in the end it was agility that won out, as the Under 14s claimed a 17-10 victory.
In the Premier Division BuccaStorm managed to continue their winning ways as they took out Surge in yet another hard fought encounter, claiming four tries to overcome the Surge’s two converted tries for a final score of 20-14.
The win booked a spot in the final for BuccaStorm, with the final Premier 1 game between Iguanas and Surge deciding who would progress to the third place playoff.
In the Premier 2 Division, Pigs Trotters retained their unbeaten status as they steamrollered the Academy team with a massive 29-5 victory, booking their spot in the final against BuccaStorm, with the Academy dropping to the third place playoff.
Maples remained undefeated in the Social Division as they claimed a 19-12 victory over the Clydesdales and in so doing moved on to the Social Division final.
In the second Battle of the Sexes, the Under 14s seemed to find their stride against the Women’s 2 side, running out a handsome 31-10 victory.
In the final Premier 1 pool game, Iguanas claimed their first win of the day as they defeated Surge 26-12 and in so doing progressed to the third place playoff against the Academy side.
Clydesdales and Remax clashed in the last Social Division pool game, with Clydesdales overpowering their rivals with a 22-12 victory and setting themselves up for a rematch with Maples in the Social Division final.
The Social Division final was a closely contested game once more, as Maples and Clydesdales traded tries throughout the game. However it ended up being a repeat of their first encounter of the day as Maples claimed the win by one try, beating the Clydesdales by 20-15.
The Under 14s and Women’s 1 met up for their second encounter of the day, with the Under 14s retaining their unblemished record in another close game, taking the win 24-17.
The third place playoff in the Premier Division saw the Iguanas take on the Academy squad. The Iguanas managed to use their strength to overpower the Academy side and claim third place with a 22-12 victory.
The final of the Premier Division had two undefeated teams, BuccaStorm and Pigs Trotters, putting their unblemished reputations on the line.
In a hotly contested game neither team was willing to give an inch, but at the final whistle it was Pigs Trotters who emerged victorious, claiming the trophy with a score of 22-17.
