More than 86 per cent of the
respondents to last week’s caycompass.com online poll think the Cayman Islands
should have a sex offenders registry.
Of the 491 total respondents in the
poll, 370 of them – 75.4 per cent – thought Cayman should have a sex offenders
registry that was fully accessible to the public.
“These people are among us every
day,” said one person.
“You wouldn’t know until something
happens to you.”
“It’s about time someone put this
idea forward,” said another respondent.
“The information should be tracked
and kept up to date by police, but only accessed by the public through a
freedom of information request,” said someone else.
Another 53 people – 10.8 per cent –
thought there should be a sex offenders registry, but that it should only be
accessible on request by employers or parents of young children.
“There may be need to background
check teachers and employees like helpers to keep the young of our Island
safe,” said one person.
“The registry should only be
obtained through the same process as the freedom of information act,” said
someone else.
Twenty-nine respondents – 5.9 per
cent – thought only the police should have access to the information that would
be contained on a sex offenders registry.
“The forever punishment outweighs
the benefits of the registry,” said one person.
“Protect your children regardless
of your neighbours’ reputations.”
Twenty-seven people – 5.5 per cent
– did not think Cayman should have sex offenders registry because it would lead
to retaliation and vigilantism and 12 people – 2.4 per cent – responded “I
don’t know” to the question.
Next
week’s poll:
In the
long term, where do you think the Port Authority cargo dock should be located?
Right where
it is now in George Town Harbour
A little
farther north than it is now, where it was proposed to go last year
In the East
End district, where it is proposed to go now
In the
North Sound somewhere
I don’t
know.

Why have a ‘dont know’ choice?
Surely if someone doesn’t know, there is no point in voting?
Editor’s note: You’d be surprised how many interesting comments we get attached to the ‘don’t know’ answers.
Just one problem with a OPEN REGISTRY. If someone is a first time offender and reforms from his/her ways, and have a family here with children, they should not be subjected to this invasion of privacy. Imagine the children and impact upon that person’s family when his past has just been disclosed for all to mock!
Hence… I feel that this law should NOT apply to First Time Offenders who have went through some sort of rehabilitation program.
