No one can take the Mickey now

One of Pirates Week’s most
established sporting events is being postponed.

The annual Mickey Mouse darts
tournament is now slated to take place next Sunday 28 November. The Corner
Pocket bar is expected to serve as host from 1pm. The competition was slated to
take place this Sunday 21 November but was put off with the news that darts
legend Trevor Lloyd had passed away.

Lloyd, 60, was one of the
longest-tenured members of the Cayman Islands Darts Association. He had just
served as organizer of the Vivian Rankine memorial darts tournament. He also
played in the competition and posted a runner-up spot with Richard Campbell in
the doubles segment. It is believed that Lloyd passed away on 5 November due to
a heart attack he suffered while competing in a darts tournament in Barbados.

Much of the local darts community
is saddened by Lloyd’s passing. Among those hard hit is Paul Anglin, the
current president of the darts association. The West Bay native readily states
that Lloyd played a part in his development as a player years ago and was set
to be a big part of the proposed youth league.

“At this point what I know is that
the funeral is scheduled for this Sunday and assuming that goes off as scheduled
the tournament will follow next weekend,” Anglin said. “That’s what I’m looking
at right now. His body is currently in Barbados and it’s a matter of getting it
here in time.

“On a personal level his death
couldn’t have come at a worse time. He was so eager and passionate about the
youth league. He even agreed he would coach Wesleyan (Christian School) in that
program. The knowledge and assistance that man offered to the sport of darts
will be a great loss. He had such a vivacious personality, he was a great guy
and it’s a major loss to the darts world.”

The Mickey Mouse tournament is the
last major competition on the local darts calendar. The tournament comes weeks
after the annual Vivian Rankine memorial tournament. Filipino star Mel Tagalog
won the event outright with Paul Anglin and Hank Ebanks being the other major
winners. Tagalog is also the defending Mickey Mouse champion as he won the
singles and doubles category.
