Jay and Al Bodden are a father-son
duo synonymous with local motorsports. Fittingly racers are set to pay tribute
to them once again with a competition.
Twenty drivers are slated to race
in the Al and Jay Bodden Memorial Time Attack meet this Sunday. The Progressive
Loop, the current home for local autocross, will see action from 8am. The first
round of the event is 9am-1pm and after an hour lunch break the second segment
is on 2-6pm.
The Boddens were huge contributors
to racing in Cayman. Father Jay Bodden owned the land on which the Progressive
Loop now sits. That property also was the site of the old Lakeview raceway dirt
track. Bodden allowed the association to host Time Attack on a portion of his
land since 2007.
Interestingly, before dexterity
racing came on board the motorsport association was solely a circuit racing
club. The association relied on the Bodden land to play host to circuit races
year round until the end of the season in November. At that point racers and
spectators would see endurance 100 lap races dubbed the Al Bodden Memorial endurance
race.
Al died years ago while Jay past
away last year. The Cayman Motorsports Association began hosting a autocross
race in their honour in 2009. Current motorsports association president Bobby
Hulse spoke about the importance of the Bodden family to racing.
“Al and Jay Bodden were true
supporters of motor racing, particularly autocross,” Hulse said. “The
motorsports association owes a lot to those two men and that is why we felt it
important to continue the tradition and hold a memorial event in their honour.”
Format for the day’s action will
see drivers split up into two classes: street (including Front-, Rear- and
All-Wheel Drive) and unlimited. Each competitor gets 10 runs with each lap
being around two minutes in length (which is fairly long by normal local autocross
standards). Timing will be cumulative with the worst two runs being dropped.
There will be no battle round and points gained in the event will not impact
the current season standings.
Mandatory preregistration will be
held at Parker’s on Friday from 7-10pm. The entry fee is CI$75 and awards will
be given to the top three drivers in each class.
