Normally a match-up between the San
Diego Chargers and the Denver Broncos is a significant game in American
football. But based on this year’s performances so far that match carries far less
interest.
However there is no telling what
might happen on Monday night when the two sides square off at 8.30pm on ESPN.
Philip Rivers might throw for 450 yards and dish out four touchdowns to Antonio
Gates, Darren Sproles and company. Kyle Orton might get sacked three times but
still get over 300 yards passing. It could even be a defensive struggle between
the likes of Luis Castillo of the Chargers and Champ Bailey of the Broncos.
What is certain is that both teams
need the victory. Both clubs sport losing records at the bottom of the AFC West
and need to start three-four game winning streaks to carry any realistic
playoff aspirations.
Based on what the sides have done
this season, the Chargers have the most hope and the best chance of winning on
Monday. Clearly their defence is not the same without the likes of Shawne
Merriman and Antonio Cromartie. But the offence is right there among the best
in the league. As likely as a stand-out game from Broncos wide-out Brandon
Lloyd seems, San Diego should prevail. Expect the “Bolts” to zap Denver by two
touchdowns.
