Cayman Brac’s Heritage Day takes
place this weekend, so if you’re thinking of heading over, now’s your chance to
get those flights booked.
Cayman Brac is just 14 square
miles, but it has enough caves, coastline, trails and attractions to keep
visitors busy. It’s the second largest of the three Cayman Islands.
With a population of less than
2,000, the Brac is a friendly, laid-back destination where relaxation is the
order of the day.
There are some glorious dive sites
off Cayman Brac, including a renowned ship wreck dive at the MV Capt. Keith
Tibbetts off the north shore.
To find out about the fascinating
history of the Brac, visit the Cayman Brac Museum, the oldest in the Cayman
Islands.
Brac is a Gaelic word for bluff and
the island is named for its 140-foot high bluff – the highest elevation in the
Cayman Islands.
The District Administration Office
can arrange free, tailor-made tours for visitors. The many caves on the Brac
serve as sites for tours and also shelter during hurricanes and severe storms.
This year visitors and locals alike
will be pleased to see the way Cayman Brac Heritage Day has been spread around
the island and expanded.
Cayman Airways, hotels and
businesses are all working together to make this the most inexpensive weekend
in the Brac ever.
Back in Brac
The Heritage Day at the Brac starts
with a launch party on Thursday, 25 November at the Brac Reef Beach Resort. The
following evening, the welcome party kicks off at 6pm at Hotel Alexander. Then
a late party keeps celebrations going into the night, from 11pm at Coral Isle.
The main event begins at 10am with
opening ceremonies at Heritage House, and all day thereafter live bands, food
stalls, crafts, business and heritage display booths, plus a plethora of events
take place.
The parade, which like the whole of
Cayman’s National Festival is under the theme of Cayman Past, Present and
Future, begins at the Hotel Alexander parking lot at 3pm. This year it welcomes
back primary schools as well as many new entrants. Floats assemble for judging
and presentations at the final call, Scott’s Dock. Fireworks follow.
Later in the evening, head to Sand
Bar at La Esperanza for the farewell party, starting from 8.30pm.
Rounding it all off on Sunday, 28
November, there will be dominoes and Cayman style food at La Esperanza.
Flight deals to the Brac are
available on the official airline of Pirates Week, Cayman Airways.
