Christmas Breeze concert and activities seek to raise money for restoration of Miss Lassie’s House
A sure sign that the holidays are
just around the corner has always been the slight cooling of temperatures and
those fresh north-easterly winds, affectionately called the Christmas Breeze,
so it should be no surprise that an event heralding that special time of year
should be named just that.
Christmas Breeze, a Cayman National
Cultural Foundation production, featuring the Cayman Islands Folk Singers, will
be held on Thursday, 25 November on the Crescent at Camana Bay starting at 6pm.
In addition to the featured Folk
Singers, the impressive line-up of performers includes Swanky, the George Town
Primary Dancers, Mar Martinez and the Powery Family Comedy.
Live and silent auctions, together
with raffles of many useful items complete the evening’s activities. This could
be the perfect opportunity to pick up great Christmas gifts, including
delicious heavy cakes, while benefiting a worthwhile cause.
This free concert is a fundraiser
in aid of the ongoing restoration and conservation of Miss Lassie’s House. The Save Miss Lassie’s House project is the
single largest undertaking of the Cultural Foundation, according to CNCF’s artistic
director, Henry Muttoo.
“The house has been stabilised and
the restoration is under way,” he said. “The original windows and doors have
all been taken off and are scheduled for preservation. Exact replicas are
currently under construction and will be painted by local artists, who are all
donating their time and talents.”
CNCF is working with Isabel Rigol
from Cuba, who is assisting with the preparation of the documentation for a
proposal to UNESCO to have Miss Lassie’s House placed on the World Monument
Watch List and The World Heritage List.
“We hope to get the financial
support from the community to allow us to continue with this very important
work, since it covers our cultural heritage and the development of art in the
Cayman Islands.”
