The Cayman Islands Postal Service announced on Thursday that effective 1 July, it is temporarily suspending acceptance of postal items containing goods destined for European Union countries.
In a press release, the Postal Service said, “The temporary suspension is due to the implementation of new European Union destination duty requirements that have recently come into effect. The duty requirements vary across European Union member states.”
The Postal Service and its technology providers are in negotiations with each destination to establish the necessary arrangements for implementation, the press release noted.
The Postal Service said the suspension of service will remain until the relevant agreements have been put in place. It added that customers sending documents to EU destinations will not be affected by this temporary disruption to services, as it only relates to parcels that contain goods or merchandise.
The Postal Service said it anticipates resuming the service with a phased approach, as each EU destination’s agreement is put in place. It said further updates will be provided as service options reopen.
During this temporary suspension of services, the Postal Service is encouraging customers who need to send goods to European destinations to make alternative arrangements until postal acceptance resumes.
