A text message scam claiming to be from the “Cayman Post” could lead to bank accounts being raided, police and the government have warned.

Police said the message advises that a package has arrived and duty has to be paid before delivery can be completed.

But the link to what appears to be an official government website, where people are asked to make payment, is a fake and the information is used to hack into the victim’s bank account.

“The public is being advised to ignore any such messages received and not to click any links within,” the police said in a press release on Friday.

Police added that the service had been alerted by “multiple” reports from concerned members of the public, some of whom had already had their accounts raided.

Police are advising anyone who had already clicked on the link or made a payment to contact their bank and make a report to police at 949-4222.

Police said that the post office and other government bodies would never ask for customs duty or fees to be paid through text messages.

Police added that people should always access government websites by typing the URL themselves.
