A food truck worker fought off two armed, masked men who tried to steal his e-bike despite being left injured from a head wound.

The employee was inside the Burger Shack truck in Prospect, next to the Cayman Islands Brewery, when a coworker spotted the thieves taking the bike, which was parked just feet from the business.

He then raced out of the truck and grabbed one of the men, who had what appeared to be a firearm.

In a press release, police said that the owner of the e-bike was “struck in the head, causing an injury”, adding that “During the altercation, the suspect discharged a flare gun,” however, “No injuries were reported from the discharge itself.”

The thieves dropped the bike and fled and the man was later taken to the Anthony S. Eden Hospital for treatment for his injuries, which police said, “did not appear to be life-threatening”.

Siddika Baral, 23, the co-worker who alerted the man, said the thief had “what looked like a gun”.

She added that her 26-year-old colleague, who was not named, appeared to be bleeding from the neck after the incident.

Baral said, “We were shocked. He grabbed one of them – he was quite brave.

“They just left the cycle and they ran away and we called the police.”

‘Frightening’ experience

Baral added, “It was frightening and we didn’t know the gun wasn’t real at first.”

The incident happened about 12.20pm on Thursday, 28 May.

Baral said, “I was a little bit scared – I’m just glad it’s all over.”

She added that the police arrived just 10 minutes after the incident.

Baral said, “The police were very helpful, but I don’t think they have caught anyone yet.”

Police said the pair escaped on foot and that the area was searched without result.

Two food truck incidents in days

The incident was the second involving a food truck in just four days.

A 52-year-old man was arrested after Steam & Spice, based in a car park next to Ugland House on George Town’s South Church Street, was robbed on Monday, 25 May and several hundred dollars were stolen.

The arrest came after two men – one carrying what appeared to be a handgun and the other with a knife – targeted the business about 9.35pm.

Police said firearms officers who were on patrol in the George Town area rushed to the scene after a 911 call from the business.

The officers checked the surrounding area and spotted two men on bicycles in the Windsor Park area that matched descriptions given by people at the scene of the robbery.

The men saw the police, ditched the bikes and tried to escape on foot.

Officers left their vehicle and chased after the pair.

The 52-year-old was caught and arrested on suspicion of robbery and other offences.
