The Ministry of Education and Training and the Department of Education Services have announced the expansion of the 2026 Summer School Programme to include students from Years 1 through 6.

In a joint press release, the ministry and department said, “The programme, which runs from 7 to 24 July brings targeted summer support in mathematics and literacy to approximately 725 children across government primary schools for the first time.”

The programme was introduced for Year 6 students in 2023 and was later expanded to include Years 4 to 6 in 2025. Under the current expansion, students in Years 1 to 5 will attend sessions at designated primary school sites while out-going Year 6 students will be based at their new secondary school settings.

Children are selected for the programme through their schools, and their parents were contacted directly ahead of the start date.

“For many of our families, the school holidays bring real financial pressure, particularly in households with more than one school-age child. Summer School gives parents confidence that their children are in a safe, structured environment where they are learning, and it takes a meaningful weight off families during a challenging period,” said Education Minister Rolston Anglin.

Department of Education Services Director Mark Ray added, “Expanding the programme to Year 1 means we are reaching children at the very foundation of their learning journey. The earlier we provide targeted support, the better positioned students are to thrive as they progress through school.”
