Two cruise lines withdraw from St Kitts after attack

Princess and Carnival Cruises have
cancelled calls to the Eastern Caribbean island of St. Kitts following a
robbery.

On Sunday, 14 November, a bus
carrying 16 passengers from the Celebrity Mercury was waylaid on its way to a
tour called Essential St. Kitts by armed robbers, who threw rocks and blocked
the road with branches.

When the driver got out to clear
the road, the masked robbers boarded the bus and made off with an unspecified
quantity of mobile phones, cash and jewellery. There were no injuries.

Calls cancelled

In the aftermath of the attack,
Grand Princess cancelled a call to Basseterre as investigations were still
ongoing, and Carnival Miracle went to Antigua instead. Together, the two ships
hold a maximum of 4.724 people.

  1. BurningFish, I wouldn’t use the words "should happen".

This was an extraordinary incident where rocks were thrown and a road blocked to carry out the robbery. The possibility of an attack of such scale and audacity on a tour bus in Cayman is not very great.

Despite the above 10% increase in overall crime in the past year, Grand Cayman is still a very safe place compared to other cities in the Caribbean. In these difficult financial times you will see the odd house or shop burglary every week. I still feel safe here and don’t see a mob robbing a tour bus. Having said that, more should be done to combat gang violence which has claimed many lives this year.

  2. Please RCIPS, do what is takes to stop the violence. This is just a sign of what could happen to Cayman. No matter what folks think, if tourists stop coming the economy will fail…Imagine no Cruise ships coming into George Town..How many people rely on this business
