BT Heritage Day celebrates new location

The Mission House grounds in Gun
Square were highlighted on Bodden Town’s Heritage Day on Friday, 19 November,
as it was the first time the event was held at that location.

The Mission House historic site
includes a traditional Caymanian two-story home situated on an area of dry and
wetland. The site is known for its abundant waterfowl and supply of water in
the 1700s for early settlers.

Hundreds of spectators flocked to
the Heritage Day festival, part of Cayman’s National Festival, Pirates Week, to
sample food from around the Island, as well as to view the arts and craft on
display. Music was provided throughout the day by several bands, as pirates,
along with children, beauty queens and political personalities came together to
celebrate the occasion.

Bodden Town MLA Dwayne Seymour commented
on the district’s Heritage Day: “We are extremely pleased with the set up for
this year’s event and the fact that this is the first time ever it is being
done at the Mission House grounds. It is our hope that this location can be
continued to be utilized for such endeavours in Bodden Town. There is a lot of
history here for people to enjoy and we hope that we will be the winners of the
district day competition when all is said and done.”

Bodden Town District Committee
Member and resident Luigi Moxam said the district Heritage Day received quite a
bit of traction this year, with the various committees and councils coming
together in earnest to make it a day to remember.

“This is what being
Caymanian is about. We have always been a people that celebrate community
together, and the fact that so many people made an effort to pool their resources
this year is evident in all the trimmings and extra touches that everyone will
enjoy this year.”
