Two men and a woman have been arrested after a liquor store was robbed and an attempted robbery at a convenience store, police have said.

The news came after two men armed with knives and dressed in hoodies and masks robbed the Tortuga Fine Wine & Spirits shop at Country Corner on Hirst Road in Savannah on Tuesday night.

They escaped with what was described as a small amount of cash and some wine – which they dropped in their rush to flee.

A third individual, a female, was seen to run in the same direction as the two men.

Eugene Nolan, Tortuga Rum Company CEO, said no one was injured in the robbery, but staff had been offered help to deal with the shock.

“Our people come first,” Nolan said. “We are ensuring our team receives the care and assistance they need.”

He said, “It was cash they were after and they did get a small a small amount. Purposely, we keep very little cash in the till for this exact reason.

“They also stole a bottle or two, but they did drop them on the way out.”

Nolan added that the company “continued to remain vigilant” and encouraged other business owners to do the same.

The incident happened at about 8:15pm on 3 Feb.

One of the thieves was wearing a distinctive black hoodie with a large white logo on the chest and white lettering down the left arm and the other a light grey hoodie.

Nolan thanked police for their fast response to the incident and appealed for anyone with information about the crime to contact them.

“We are fully supporting them in their efforts to identify and hold those responsible accountable,” he said.

The Tortuga robbery was followed a little more than an hour later by an attempted robbery at a store on George Town’s Walkers Road, alleged to have involved the same three people.

Two masked men wearing masks and with knives tried to rob the male cashier, who fought back.

Police said the cashier suffered minor injuries, but escaped and ran from the store, where customers helped keep the door shutters closed until police arrived.

The men, one aged 18 and the other 28, both from West Bay, as well as a female said to be a juvenile, were arrested and remain in custody.

An abandoned car believed to be linked to the Walkers Road incident and cash were also seized by police.

The cashier was taken to the Anthony S. Eden Hospital in George Town, where he was treated for “serious but non-life threatening injuries” and later released.

Police praised the courage of the cashier and the members of the public who helped hold them in the store, but warned that personal safety should always come first.

In a separate incident, a convenience store on Hirst Avenue in Newlands was hit at about 8pm on Monday, 2 Feb.

Two men, one brandishing a knife, stole a quantity of cash and fled on foot.

The pair were said to be of medium build and wearing black clothes. One was wearing a red mask and red slippers.

  1. I think the brave cashier who fought back deserves a reward from Crime Stoppers.

And the thugs deserve a long sentence in prison. Ten years or longer.

I believe there are a small number of “career” criminals who support themselves by stealing from others. Catch them, imprison them for many years and our beautiful islands will again be safe for everyone.
