Brac teens committed over to Grand Court

Charge relates to imitation firearm

Five teenage males appeared in Summary Court on Cayman Brac on Thursday, 18 November, when they were committed to stand trial for a firearm offence.

They are charged with possession of an imitation firearm with intent to commit an offence. Specifically, the allegation is that they had it on 16 March along West End Road, somewhere in the vicinity of Brac Snacks and Economy Electronics, with the intention of threatening violence.

At the time of the alleged offence, two of the boys were 14 and one was 16. The other two were 17 and have since turned 18. They are Gerron Pierre Martin and Jean Pierre Stewart.

Earlier in the day, Chief Magistrate Margaret Ramsay-Hale assigned legal aid for the purposes of a preliminary inquiry, which is necessary to determine whether there is sufficient evidence for the matter to go to Grand Court. The matter was adjourned for several hours while other cases were heard, giving lawyers time to study the files.

Shortly after 4pm, Attorneys John Furniss, Lloyd Samson and Keith Collins agreed there was a case to answer.

The magistrate directed the teens to appear in Grand Court in Grand Cayman on Wednesday, 12 January, which is the opening of the next criminal session. She continued their bail.

A police report issued shortly after the incident referred to two teens being arrested and the recovery of a firearm. The hearing on Thursday did not go into details.
