Pirates Week celebrates Cayman Brac’s food, heritage

The final weekend of Pirates Week 2010 puts Cayman Brac in the spotlight.

The 2,000-inhabitant island will be boosted by visitors from far and wide who travel to the beautiful, rugged island for Cayman’s National Festival.

The Welcome Party begins today (Friday, 26 November) at the Hotel Alexander from 6pm – live bands and a seafood buffet provide sustenance. The Late Party at Coral Isle begins at 11pm as the excitement ramps up for Saturday’s events.

Heritage Day events take place at Heritage House in North East Bay, starting at 10am Saturday with opening ceremonies, conch shell calling, flag raising and the national song, followed by all manner of surprise heritage events, door prizes and displays.

Look for a kids’ corner, complete with crab races, coconut boats, face painting, children’s shell and bead bracelet making, a children’s tug of war and more. Get your photo taken in old-time style, watch the caboose cooking and rope-making demonstrations and enjoy the primary school steel band.

Note that parking at the site is limited and a free shuttle bus will be in operation.

At 3pm, the float parade will start at Hotel Alexander and moving toward Scott’s Dock, the theme of Cayman Past, Present & Future will be perfectly showcased as teams vie for the title of best float. The fireworks display follows before the farewell party at the Sand Bar rounds off another wonderful, family-friendly festival that Cayman does so well.
