Cayman Brac’s Heritage Day managed to be both laid-back and well-organised as it wrapped up Pirates Week. At Heritage House, Brackers, visitors, family and friends gathered for demonstrations of arts and crafts such as silver thatch weaving and fish fry at a caboose, plus exhibits from the museum and, for the kids, a bouncy castle, bracelet making, face painting and more. The food was local and delicious and the sounds of C-Level kept the energy rolling. Local kids showed that the musical talent is being passed on, too, with great steel pan playing that delighted the crowds.
Float parade
Later in the afternoon the float parade got under way, starting at the Alexander Hotel and making its merry way down to Cemetery Pier where all gathered in the company of Las Tortugas Pirates to celebrate Cayman’s National Festival in good cheer.
The warmth and creativity on show throughout the weekend was a fitting bookmark to what has been an excellent Pirates Week 2010; there’s been something for all ages, from the youngest kids to the senior generation, sharing the heritage and knowledge that’s so important to a country’s identity while celebrating the energy and ideas from exuberant youngsters. Long may it continue.
