I would like to congratulate Dr. Annette Stephenson on her achievement as Cayman’s first audiologist.
Audiologists play a very important role in the community and provide valuable services from birth to end of life.
Newborn hearing screenings (which should be done within the first month of life) can ensure that any hearing loss can be detected early, and that children can receive proper services (including amplification, alternatative communication methods, cochlear implantation and early intervention) which will ensure that their future academics will not be compromised.
For older populations, they are able to receive proper amplification, which will provide them with a higher quality of life.
Hearing is something that we often take for granted; but for those who cannot hear, their hearing loss presents with unique personal, professional and academic challenges. Audiology services are vital to these members of our community.
I wish Dr. Stephenson all the best on this endeavour and hope that through continued community education, society will appreciate the need for audiology services.
