Check garage door installation

I would like to share the recent experience of my garage door breaking that could have had tragic consequences as there was a serious defect with the way the door was professionally installed.

I am worried that other garage doors in Cayman have been similarly installed and owners will be unaware there is an issue until it is too late.

The problem I had was with the way the bracket from the motor was attached to the door. I have since discovered the warning notice on the door from the manufacturer advising that the door needs to be properly attached to this bracket.

This was certainly not the case and the door when closing came loose from the motor and slammed shut with a considerable amount of force. I hate to think what would have happened had one of my children been in the garage at the time.

The bracket was attached to a piece of metal not much thicker than tin foil and held by four half-inch screws secured to the interior polystyrene of the door. This is obviously too weak, however the installers felt differently and also decided to ignore the manufacturer’s instructions.

How the door worked for two years is a miracle.

From looking on the Internet I quickly found that the manufacturer recommends using a specially designed heavy duty bracket for double garage doors.

I hope by sharing this information that other owners of garage doors will check the quality of their installation.

I am grateful to Mike Hare of Creative Marine Specialties who added three-inch by eight-inch metal plates to both sides of the door and bolted them together with the bracket through the entire thickness of the door.

If anyone needs assistance making their door safe I recommend Mike and his phone number is 916-0131.
