What a wonderful letter by Twyla Vargas. In it she spoke about libraries and their value to us, and why we should support them.
As a boy, I remember going to the library on Saturdays with my dad. That is where my love of books began.
Some younger people may scoff at the idea of libraries, but I would like to share a brilliant description which I read of what books can do for us. The writer says, ‘Here there is a table, covered with a red tablecloth. In the middle of the tablecloth is a cage, about the size of an aquarium. Inside the cage is a white rabbit. It has a pink nose, which it twitches and it is eating a bright orange carrot. And also on its back is the numeral eight in blue.’
Can each of see the same picture? Because if we have, the writer has succeeded in sending a picture over time and space with the magic of the written word. No other medium stretches our imagination and allows us to travel the way a book can.
So kids put down your X-Box and go to your library and find the world there. It is a wondrous world of dreams and imagination.
When the X-Box is broken and all the games are boring there will always be books and they’re yours for the taking.
