Following a long hiatus, the Cayman Motorsports Association (CMA) has regrouped with plans to rebuild its membership and develop a full schedule of races for the remainder of the year.
The Association’s newly elected board consists of Mr Bobby Hulse, President; Mr Gerry Holness, Vice-President; Mrs Vicki Hulse, Treasurer; Ms Tonita Powell, Secretary and Chad Phillips, Assistant Secretary.
The Association was formed in the early 80s and has been racing in one form or another since then. The continuity and activeness of the Association was interrupted in 2003 when the Association’s dedicated race track, kindly provided by Mr Jay Bodden, was reclaimed for development and then again in 2004 by Hurricane Ivan.
Mr Bobby Hulse, CMA President said the Association looked forward to rebuilding to its former glory.
‘With so many road deaths in Cayman we intend to do all we can to be a positive force in the community,’ he said. ‘We are beginning slowly but have already had two very successful events and have set out a championship calendar for the rest of the year.’
‘Our recent ‘Time Attack’ events consisted of a time-trial course around cones. It’s a good event for drivers of all skill levels as it teaches you how to control your car in a safe and controlled manner,’ Mr Hulse said. ‘Penalties are given for touching cones so good, clean driving is rewarded.’
The first ‘Time Attack’ event was held on April 29 behind CUC by Island Paving. Twenty-two cars participated in four classes: front wheel drive (FWD), rear wheel drive (RWD) and all wheel drive (AWD). Each car drove the course three times with the best time taken for the winners in each class. The drivers with the top-ten times participated in the Championship Run, consisting of a modified course.
Winners were Cliff Weeks, Evo 3 (AWD); Sacha Tibbetts, Miata (RWD); and Gary ‘Rambo’ Barrett, Civic (FWD). The overall winner was ‘Rambo’ in his race-prepared Civic.
Sponsorship of equipment rentals was secured from AI Rentals and prizes for the first event were sponsored by Parkers. Mr Hulse said the Association would like to thank the two companies for their contributions and support.
The second ‘Time Attack’ event on May 27 was held in the same area with 19 cars participating. The FWD class was lightly contested, with Gary Bromfield in his near stock Integra taking the win with very clean driving. The RWD class was won by veteran racer Gary Huggins with a flawless drive in his well prepared 84 Starlet. The AWD class was hotly contested with only cone penalty separating the top finishers. In the end Karyl Iton in his Impreza won the class. The Championship Run was also very close, and was won by Gary Huggins.
‘The club encourages everyone to come and participate and test themselves,’ Mr Hulse said. ‘Even if you don’t think you have a chance to win, consistently lowering your times and learning about your vehicle is great fun and very educational.’
The second ‘Time Attack’ race was sponsored by Automotive Art. Mr Wayne Kirkconnell of Automotive Art said he was
‘I’m glad to see the club getting back on its feet. As a former and future racer I’m happy to help out in anyway that I can.’
Mr Hulse asked that anyone with a good stretch of road on private land contact the Association at [email protected] or phone him on 916-5137.
