For the second time in a week, a cargo plane has been forced to make an emergency landing at Owen Roberts Airport.
The plane in the latest incident was en route to Miami from Costa Rica Sunday. The aircraft reported pressurisation problems with one of its engines and contacted the airport tower at around 12.30pm asking permission to land.
Cayman Islands Airports Authority Director David Frederick said a full emergency response was initiated, but the aircraft and its four crew members landed safely.
The craft had to stay at the airport overnight while a Cayman Airways maintenance crew coordinated repairs. It departed Monday morning.
Just four days earlier, airport officials said a three person crew on board a Cayman Airways cargo plane had problems getting the wing flaps to engage prior to the craft’s scheduled landing.
Again, as a precaution, Mr. Frederick said a full emergency was declared. Fire crews were put on standby at the airport runway and police officers closed the street at the junction of Dorcy Drive and Crewe Road.
Mr. Frederick said the aircraft in the 14 June emergency landing also was not a commercial flight. He said it burned off excess fuel by circling the area prior to making a safe landing.
