The Western Union Foundation today donated $50,000 to the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies in support of Hurricane Dean relief efforts.
Additionally, Western Union Agent GraceKennedy, in Jamaica, has committed approximately J$10 million benefiting United Way of Jamaica, states a press release.
The Western Union Foundation also is encouraging employee donations through the Western Union Employee Gift Matching Program. The Western Union Foundation will match registered employee donations to recognized non-profit organizations on a one-to-one basis, up to $25,000.
‘The Category 4 storm tore a path of destruction through parts of Jamaica,’ said Luella Chavez D’Angelo, president The Western Union Foundation. ‘Through our Agent Gift Matching Program, IFRC will use the funds to assist with critical efforts in support of families and children most affected by the hurricane.’
Since 2001, The Western Union Foundation alone has awarded over $40 million in grants to more than 1,500 non-profit organizations, across 70 countries, that provide critical disaster relief, education and basic human services.
Joe Taffe, acting CEO of GraceKennedy, on hearing of the contribution said, ‘Jamaica is thankful to the Western Union Foundation for their support during our time of need. Although Hurricane Dean was not a direct hit to the island, many parts of Jamaica experienced severe damage and will require significant rebuilding. This contribution from the Western Union Foundation will certainly help in these efforts.’
