Touched by World Cup distractions

Touch rugby enjoyed another Super Saturday at South Sound and a lot of fun was had as usual by the competing teams.

Organised into social and premier leagues, the two pitches were busy all afternoon as teams with colourful names like Butterfingers, Dark and Stormies and Blue Bisons vied for supremacy.

There were fewer spectators than usual on a sweltering hot day because many were watching World Cup rugby matches at home. For $10 they could have watched them in the South Sound club house on big screen, which is what most of the players did when not in a match. Many saw Australia defeat Wales 32-20 but the game was effectively over by half-time as the Aussies scored three tries and were 25-3 up.

Maybe some of the touch rugby fans watching were acquiring tips for their own game. Grizz’s Old Fellas, led by Cayman rugby’s technical director Richard ‘Grizz’ Adams, were in fine form as usual. Ably backed up in the Grizz team by David Mays, Cayman’s community development coach, they looked capable of taking on the Wallabies even in their bare feet.
