United Church offers counselling

Inspired by the ministry of Christ and the increasing community counselling needs experienced by its ministers, the United Church in Jamaica and the Cayman Islands has established the Bethesda Counselling Centre.

The Centre, which opens Thursday at 5.30pm, will provide professional, curative and preventive counselling and therapeutic intervention to individuals, couples, families and groups, within a caring, understanding, non-judgmental environment.

These services will be provided by professionally and clinically trained counsellors but the Bethesda Counselling Centre says it will distinguish itself from other counselling services by deliberately ensuring that all its endeavours are under girded by Christ’s view of the inherent worth and potential of each individual, states a press release.

The Rev. Joseph Crawford, who holds a Masters Degree in Social Work from the University of Maryland at Baltimore and who has worked as a counsellor with children and families in the US, will be the centre’s first counsellor.

Mr. Crawford has many years experience as a pastor having served with the United Church in Grand Cayman both in the 1970s and again from 2002 – 2006. In between he was with the Presbyterian Church USA as a pastor and a counsellor. He also holds a Masters Degree in Theology from Princeton Theological Seminary in New Jersey, USA. He has extensive experience as a counsellor, including providing marital and premarital counselling, counselling for schools and families and in running individual and group sessions. He served as chairman of the Children and Youth Services foundation from 2003-2004.

The centre is in central George Town, at Unit 4, 68 Mary Street.

Its services are also available in the evenings, by appointment, through the United Churches in the other Districts of Grand Cayman.

The centre can be reached by calling 946-6575 or by e-mail at [email protected]. It offers individual, couples and group sessions, including marriage, pre-marital and children’s counselling.
