An early Monday morning fire at the Crighton Building is under investigation.
At 5.29am Monday 911 received a call that there was smoke in the building.
The fire department responded to the call and arrived on the scene at 5.32am. Two tankers and one rescue truck and a crew of five were on board.
Because the offices were closed at the time and firemen did not want to break a window, the owner of the building Mr. Rex Crighton was contacted for the keys.
At the scene, firemen located a small fire on ground floor in the offices of Evans and Oracle Real Estate Consultants Ltd.
An office drawer containing burning items was located and taken outside to the front of the Crighton Building.
By this time employees reporting to work at 8.30am had gathered in front of the building.
‘The offices received heavy smoke damage but minimum fire damage and the rest of the building also received minor smoke damages,’ said fire department divisional officer Doorley McLaughlin.
The smoke was extracted with a huge fan. Some people returned to work, but the offices were not fully opened for business.
The fire is still under investigation by the fire department and a report will be compiled for the department records, he said.
After being given the all clear, workers from Rooster radio station returned to work but had to leave again because of smoke.
One news broadcaster, Barrie Quappie, said she had to be taken to the George Town Hospital for smoke inhalation. She was released four hours after receiving oxygen.
