Prison Fellowship seeking volunteers

A group of unsung good Samaritans are looking for more young volunteers to give them a hand.

For well over 20 years the hard working members of Cayman’s Prison Fellowship have been helping the prison community. Several of them have clocked up many years service.

‘We can always use more volunteers,’ says one of those long serving members, Bob Thompson.

‘We would like to see some of our Christian young people get involved in the ministry.

‘We have some good ones in the community and we would like to see them get involved with us,’ says Mr. Thompson, who is president of the Prison Fellowship and pastor of Red Bay Church of God.

The organisation does its best to help and serve the prison community in a number of ways, he says.

The Angel Tree scheme, in partnership with the Kiwanis, involves the giving of gifts to the children of prisoners every Christmas.

The organisation also gives a small calendar diary to every prisoner and prison officer and sponsors the Christian video ministry, Big Screen, in the prisons, he says.

The Prison Fellowship gives counselling and holds bible classes, although, as Mr. Thompson points out, anything religious is totally voluntary and there is no requirement for prisoners to attend.

There is also regular Thursday night worship and several members have been involved with the Sunday worship conducted by the prison chaplain, he says.

They have about 40 volunteers helping with the organisation and several churches give support by being corporate members, he adds.

The good Samaritans go about their work with the only reward being in seeing the lives of some turned around and heading in a positive and productive direction, says Mr. Thompson.

‘They do it for the Lord and for the prisoners,’ he says.

And each success they have helps to make the job worthwhile, he adds.

Mr. Thompson also works internationally with Prison Fellowship International which he says is the largest such organisation in the world, with organised chapters in 112 countries.
