It might have seemed like a typical Saturday night it wasn’t, thanks to an electrifying Government Football League Championship final between Fire and Customs.

Fire was crowned as champs in the end, but how it was done was the nothing short of phenomenal.
The two finalists bumped off the heavily favored teams to earn the spots in the final and both teams were short of key players. Before kickoff, the referee called the two captains together and some words were exchanged: ‘You all are lucky Cheeky and Brian aren’t here tonight’, said the Fire captain. The Customs captain replied:
We not at full strength either we are missing Paul and Don’.
Fans probably nevber imagined how evenly matched these teams were until the end of the first half. A running tally of shots on goal and corner kicks showed the only thing that favoured either side was the number of yellow cards for Fire who had two at the half. Customs & Fire traded shots and counterattacks but were all futile until the end of regulation time.
It took extra time to open the scoring with a bullet rifled from Urick McField that beat goalkeeper Eddie Solomon but Customs then put back on Eugene ‘The Bomber’ Myles who launched a missile on goalkeeper Deronnie Myles from outside the 18-yard box to equalize in a matter on minutes. It was a thriller as the championship had to be decided on penalties.
Fourteen penalty kicks were taken but victory finally came for Fire on the foot of Lewis McLaughlin as he calmly placed the ball wide right of Goalkeeper Eddie Solomon to secure the crown for Fire with a score of 6-5. It was a great match and the next Recreational League is now being planned by Collin Anglin.
