Rotaract is a Rotary-sponsored service club for young men and women ages 18 to 30.
The club meets for breakfast every Thursday at Breezes by the Bay in George Town at 7am. Sponsored by the three Rotary Clubs in Grand Cayman, they have been given $9,000 seed money to get them off on the right footing, said a press release.
Usually community-based or university-based, they are sponsored by local Rotary clubs, making them true ‘partners in service’ and key members of the Rotary family.
Through the Rotaract programmme young adults not only augment their knowledge and skills, but address the physical and social needs of their communities while promoting international understanding and peace.
Rotaract has become a worldwide phenomenon. There are 8,000 Rotaract clubs in some 155 countries and geographic areas.
The Rotaract Club of Grand Cayman will be officially chartered within the next few weeks and has 16 members representing Grand Cayman, Jamaica, the Philippines and the United States.
This dynamic group of young professionals and college students has selected projects focused on literacy, youth development and responsible driving.
The club is assisting John Gray High School with several ventures, which included coordinating young Caymanian professionals to make interactive presentations at the school as part of its SilverAward Program. The SilverAward Program is a prestigious award program administered in more than 20,000 schools in the UK, Caribbean and other regions. It is designed to raise awareness, develop self and to impart the skills needed to become a self sufficient citizen, the release said.
Rotaract members also volunteer with John Gray High School’s Coaching for Success Program, have assisted with Streetskill driver education campaigns and one member launched Drive Slow, an effort to encourage young people to drive responsibly.
Rotaract will be launching a drive to donate books, computers and other electronic equipment to local schools and anyone interested in making a donation should contact Rotaract’s Community Service Director Mikana Scott on 525 2511.
