Rotary Sunrise made a significant contribution to the Radiology Department of the Cayman Islands Hospital by donating US$50,000 to the Cancer Society.
The funds were raised through the Club’s Casino Night and the 2006 Car Raffle. A large part of the donation has already been spent by the Cancer Society for special scanning equipment for the Radiology Department of the Cayman Islands Hospital, stated a press release.
The equipment is part of a package that the Society has donated to the hospital to upgrade the mammography services it offers.
The scanner and software package purchased will allow the staff of the Radiology Department to scan analogue X-ray films and digitize them. This will eventually reduce the need for maintaining old analogue X-ray images. It can be used to scan any type of X-rays on film including CT and MRI images.
In addition to the scanning system, funds donated by the Club will also be used to purchase the necessary storage and back-up equipment to safeguard the data as well as a DVD writer so that patients can have their images on a CD.
Russell Smith was joint fundraising Director with Tim Dailey last year. ‘Everyone in Cayman was remarkably generous,’ they said. ‘It was a great cause and we were very glad to help.’
Christine Sanders, General Manager of the Cancer Society and now a Sunrise Rotarian, said that the equipment purchased so far will help save countless lives.
