The Achievement Centre Preschool and Kindergarten held a family fun day at South Sound Community Park last week.
The fundraiser was planned by the preschool’s PTA. According to organisers, monies raised will go to toward purchasing playground equipment lost during Hurricane Ivan and assisting with the prize-giving and award ceremony for pupils leaving in September.
The fun day was seen as a much needed tonic after last year’s hurricane. ‘We wanted to throw an event for the children of Cayman and their parents,’ said school principal Ms Cheril Calder. ‘The fun day was our chance to give them some fun and healing, having come through the storm.’
Attendance at the colourful event was bolstered by the bank holiday atmosphere and the promise, perhaps, of meet-and-greets with the larger-than-life replicas of children’s TV characters Sponge Bob, Dora and Barney.
As well as the obligatory bouncy castle/inflatable slide, beverage stall and face painting booth, visitors were also able to sample cakes, fruits and snacks available at the busy on-site food cabana.
While most of the children threw themselves into the activities on offer, many of the accompanying adults got pleasure simply from watching the youngsters enjoying themselves. For those willing to take part there was also the chance to win small prizes at one of the well-manned stalls dotted around the park.
Others who had sampled most of what the fun day had to offer took the chance to escape the heat under a shady cabana or well-appointed tree.
The Achievement Centre corralled an army of helpers, for the event, all of whom played their part in ensuring the day went smoothly.
As well as the donation by Party Land of all the portable play equipment, snow cone and popcorn machines, party favours and the costumes, staff and members of the Seventh Day Adventist Pathfinders from Savannah gave up part of their holiday to man booths, reunite lost children with parents and act as unofficial guides.
The fun day continued drawing visitors after its official closing time of 1pm. Ms Calder says organisers were happy to close the event later than scheduled to accommodate latecomers.
