Shipping Registry OK’s yacht training

The Cayman Islands Shipping Registry has announced that it has audited and approved the globally recognised International Yachtmaster Training for the registry’s Yachtmaster Coastal, Offshore and Ocean certification.

IYT has been in business for eight years and has trained nearly 12,500 students. Headquartered in Ft. Lauderdale, the company boasts 25 partner schools in 13 countries, according to a press release.

IYT prides itself on quality instruction, both in the classroom and in the practical aspects of seamanship.

The school has been approved by the U.K.’s Maritime and Coastguard Agency and 23 other governments. Since about 87 per cent of the world’s mega-yachts are registered in the Cayman Islands, getting approval from the CISR is a vital accomplishment.

‘It is an honour and a pleasure to be recognized by the Cayman Islands. We look forward to a close and mutually beneficial relationship in the future,’ said Mark Fry, president of IYT.

CISR’s Capt. James Gavin, Senior Marine Surveyor in charge of Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for seafarers spent several weeks at IYT over the past 18 months auditing its various courses.

‘I am pleased with both the quality of the courses and the professionalism of the instructors. I believe IYT is and will remain in the forefront of Yachtmaster training,’ he said.

Last week, IYT President Mark Fry and Vice President Chris Taylor came to George Town to receive the letter of acceptance from Mr. A. Joel Walton, CEO (Designate) of the CISR.
