The recent Lions Sprint Meet was a big success, say organisers.
The annual competition drew 110 swimmers this year, 19 from Cayman Brac.
‘It’s terrific the way the Lions [club members] turn out and get involved,’ said a meet organiser. ‘They have such great spirit and seem to really enjoy it all.
There were 58 events contested this year, testing the skill and power of 4-year-olds right up to teenagers.
The 7-8 year-old age group had the largest turnout.
On break from their universities, former Cayman Islands age-group stars Kaitlyn Elphinstone, Laura Stafford and Andrew Mackay returned to race in the pool that made them.
They remarked how enjoyable it was to be in the water with so many enthusiastic up-and-coming swimmers.
The Lions Sprint Meet was the first swim competition for many of the young athletes.
Dominic Ross saved the day when a power outage threatened to disrupt the meet. Ross obtained and fired up a generator in short time to keep the show going.
One of the meet’s highlights was the performance of a group of swimmers from Cayman Brac.
An official explained that some of the younger swimmers fell foul of the stroke rules and were disqualified. It’s all part of the learning curve and will hold them in good stead later as they progress up, the official said.
Many youngsters (15 or 16) attempted their first Individual Medley, as did some 6-year-olds and 7-year-olds.
‘That shows bravery and a lot of fortitude,’ said an official.
Overall, there was a lot of improvement and many personal best-times produced.
Joe and Luisa Roberts, Carolina Watler, Mya Dunkley scored PBs in all their events.
The meet referee was Adam Roberts. Grand Cayman coaches were Dominic Ross and Paula Swaby. The Brac group was led by Mike Hundt, Sue Hundt and Flynn Bush.
