Air JA cuts some meals

Staring 1 July, Air Jamaica will cut in-flight service on some international flights lasting under two-and-a-half hours, according to the Jamaica Gleaner.

The adjustments will only affect Florida and Caribbean routes.

Passengers will be offered a snack and beverage instead of full meals. However, passengers on these short flights with scheduled departures before 8:30am will receive a full breakfast and beverage service. There will be no changes to meal and beverage service on international flights longer two-and-a-half hours, according, the Jamaica Gleaner reported.

Hard liquor, beer and wine will be sold on all flights except on the London route and to first-class passengers.

The cutbacks are part of the airline’s restructuring and cost-cutting programme, which began six months ago.

Executive Chairman Vincent Lawrence said the decision was a difficult, but necessary, and will save the carrier as much as US$2 million annually.

Dr. Lawrence said the airline has focused on improving the efficiency of its operations, in the last few months, cutting costs where affordable and putting the airline on a viable footing. He claimed success in cost containment in several critical areas.

The airline must cut approximately US$50 million to remain viable. Last year, when government took back the operations of the airline, Finance Minister Omar Davies said the state could not afford more than US$30-million per year in financial support to the airline, forcing it to find ways to survive on its own.
