Canada defeats Cayman in ICC Cup

Cayman’s national cricket team lost by 120 runs in their ICC Intercontinental Cup match against Canada.

But, according to an ICC report, the team – playing in a three-day match tournament for the first time – showed real improvement as the competition progressed.

The team had also had very little time to prepare for the tournament, stepping in at the last moment in the absence of the USA.

When day three began, Cayman faced a formidable total of 295 to win.

For the first time in the competition all seven batsmen reached double figures.

Pearson Best with a solid 53 was supported by Franklin Hinds (35) and skipper Ryan Bovell with 18.

Earlier in the innings Steve Gordon (14), Ainsley Hall (30), Marc Chin (14) and Roland Ebanks (26) all made useful contributions.

The day really belonged to Canada’s spinners Sunil Dhaniram and Kevin Sandher who took a combined total of eight wickets.

Sandher ended with three for 51 from 18 overs while Dhaniram took five for 20 from 15.5.

Henry Osinde’s outstanding first innings performance of seven for 53 earned him the man of the match award.

The final points table saw Bermuda with 62 points followed by Canada with 51 and the Cayman Islands on 23.

Bermuda will now represent the Americas at the semi-finals in Namibia in October.
