When I’m feeling grouchier than usual, a friend occasionally offers a cure: he suggests we take a walk with our cameras.
Maybe it’s the fresh air or the physical activity at a leisurely pace. Maybe it’s the anticipation of photographing something we haven’t had a good look at before.
Whatever the reason, after a couple of hours I am pleasantly tired and more relaxed. My perspective is different and I feel better able to cope.
Getting a couple of good pictures is only part of the experience. Another friend who accompanies us doesn’t even carry a camera. He is satisfied to look at what we see, call our attention to his discoveries and then hold the images in his memory.
We don’t trespass into manicured yards. Neither do we risk life nor limb on the creased, creviced terrain of the island’s interior.
All of the photos on these pages were taken not far off Frank Sound Road, mostly in the vicinity of the entrance to the Mastic Trail.
They were taken not on a march to cover as much ground as possible, not in a rush from Point A to Point B. Most of the pictures presented themselves when we just stood still and observed our surroundings.
In fact, one fortuitous shot hopped into view while I was sitting in the truck waiting for my companions. I was cleaning my camera when a young frog suddenly appeared on the windscreen.
From the shaded interior and with only the sky as background, he looked like a creature from outer space. Who could resist.
