In tune with the hospice

Cayman Hospice Care is taking part in the world’s largest regular musical event tomorrow at Coconut Joe’s in support of the palliative care organisation.

Activities marking Voices for Hospices begin 10am Saturday with the restaurant hosting a four-hour charity car wash. Local blues band Red, White and Blues will be performing from 2pm-6pm, followed by a barbecue, raffle and more music from 6pm-9pm, with Vicki Wheaton both the master of ceremonies and deejay.

Cayman HospiceCare Manager John Borgwardt broke with tradition in planning the day.

‘These are usually formal concerts, but we decided to make this a fun event,’ he said.

Money will be raised through selling raffle tickets and T-shirts, and food sales. All proceeds after costs will go to the hospice. Coconut Joe’s owner, Derek Bellini, volunteered his premises for the event.

‘We’re raising funds for HospiceCare programs by having a day celebrating life,’ Mr. Borgwardt said.

This biannual event, marking World Hospice and Palliative Care Day, began with a concert in 1988 for a UK hospice. During the last global celebration in October 2003, there were 500 simultaneous concerts, for more than 400 local hospices in over 40 countries.
