A false alarm at FirstCaribbean House sent scores of bank and other office workers outdoors just before the normal lunch hour on Wednesday.
Mr. Tom Crawford, managing director of FirstCaribbean International Bank, said that a faulty heat detector set off the alarm.
‘It wasn’t a planned fire drill, but everyone responded properly,’ Mr. Crawford reported.
He explained that emergency plans call for fire marshals on each floor to ensure that people are escorted out of the building quickly and efficiently.
For most staff, the gathering area was across Main Street in the parking lot of the Bodmer Building.
Meanwhile, three appliances and crew arrived from the Fire Department and officers determined the cause of the alarm.
Mr. Crawford said bank staff lost about 45 minutes because of the incident, but all precautions were taken.
‘It was an inconvenience to staff and customers,’ he concluded, ‘but it’s better to be safe than sorry.’
