Vehicles boost response

Two new special purpose vehicles are putting the Health Services Authority on the road to improved emergency and disaster response capabilities.

Through generous contributions to a fund set up in the aftermath of Hurricane Ivan by members of the captive insurance industry in Cayman and associated service providers, the HSA will acquire a fully equipped Disaster Van and a two-ton box truck valued at more than $50,000, said a HSA press release.

Through the fund, the HAS previously purchased an ambulance for to replace one of the two lost as a result of the hurricane.

Acting Chief Executive Officer of the Health Services Authority, Mrs. Shirline Henriques, said the Mobile Medical Disaster Unit will enhance the capabilities of the HSA to immediately dispatch medical supplies to any location on the island to render assistance when needed in the event of a mass casualty.

‘In any emergency or natural disaster the ability of the emergency medical team to respond and render immediate care makes a big difference in the outcome and this vehicle will certainly boost our capabilities immensely enabling us to respond appropriately and promptly in any situation,’ she said.

The other vehicle is a utility truck which will be used by the hospital’s materials management division to transport large-scale medical equipment and supplies from the ports, airport and various other locations to the hospital.
