Hellcats dodge Doghouse upset

The dms Hellcats barely maintained their billing as the lone unbeaten team in men’s flag football.

In last Saturday’s round of action in the Island Air Flag Football League, Hellcats clipped the Doghouse Bulldogs 12-8. The long-time rivals produced a great match that, as usual, didn’t disappoint fans.

In the first half, the Hellcats got solid performances from star safety Renford ‘X-Factor’ Barnes, quarterback Jacob ‘Frecko’ Ebanks, wide-receiver Clay ‘Pookie’ Coleman, Al Nixon and Damien ‘Beast’ Barboran. Doghouse countered with a great pass rush by defensive lineman Chip Whitney.

In the second half the scoring picked up thanks to Doghouse kick returner Jyoti Choi and Hellcats wide-out Nikolai ‘Uncle Nana’ Hill nearly scored on a deep pass with Bulldogs safety Todd ‘Maverick’ Hazelwoodmaking a big tackle. Hellcats’ ever dependable running back Oliver ‘Darkstar’ Parker turned a busted play into a touchdown, capped with a great block by Coleman.

With the score 12-8. Doghouse drove the ball down field with less than two minutes remaining. But their fate was sealed when veteran cornerback Nate ‘Nate Dawg’ Narcisse put the final nail in the coffin with a spectacular interception on a pass from Bulldogs QB Chris Spigner. Nate was quoted as saying ‘I read the pass from the start of the play!’

Saturday saw a host of other interesting games. The Burger King Panthers crushed the PWC Ironmen 31-6 for a much-needed victory. Burger King opened up the scoring when Brendon Malice connected with Tito Solomon for a 40 yard TD pass. The Ironmen had Jeff Stower at the controls of the offense for the first time this season and he had a tough day. On his first possession, Stower was intercepted by Malice who made a nice return and then pitched the ball to Anthony Chin for the score and a 12-0 lead.

Stower would make up for his mistake by throwing a TD pass to Ian Bridges. In the second half both defenses stepped up. The Panthers defense had six interceptions with Malice leading the way with three, Solomon posting two and Chin had one. For PWC Ben McLaughlin and Antonio Hanna led the way with a couple picks.

Burger King put the game out of reach when Neil Clements connected with Solomon on a 40 yard TD pass and to Malice on a 50 yard TD pass. Chin delivered the dagger with an interception he returned 70 yards for a TD.

The Cox Colts smashed the Calabash Soldiers 13-6. Early on the Cox defence was guided by Chester Hurlstone. However Calabash struck first with a 15 yard TD catch from Will Peguero. Calabash failed to score the extra point giving them a six-point lead. Not to be outdone, Cox marched the ball down the field with great runs by both Hurlstone and Brad Conolly. The drive was capped off by a TD touchdown by Cox newcomer Celester Anderson. Both teams went into the half tied at six.

The second half saw Cox break the tie with a 5 yard TD pass from Kevin Solomon to Rhys Ebanks. With about eight minutes to go Calabash had many opportunities to get back into the game but failed. Two of the biggest plays was a dropped TD pass by Soldiers wide-out Peter Whittaker and a big defensive tackle by Cox veteran Dave Neilsen.

From there the Hammerhead Pirates would clip the Maples Packers 12-0. Hammerheads opened up the scoring when QB Gregory Ebanks found Baron Solomon for a 5 yard TD pass. MAPLES saw Justin Wight fill-in again at QB and Pirates defenders Andrew Wisdom and Neville Morgan stopped any scoring chances. The Packers defence, lead by Nicholas Roberts, Chris Bennett and Michael Wilson kept Maples in the game but the Pirates team sealed the win when Phil O’Connor made a 30 yard TD run.

The games this week will be at the Annex football field in George Town starting from 1pm.
