Ludevine’s long service rewarded

Tourism in Cayman is all about people and over the years stalwart Ludevine Finelli has certainly seen her share of visitors.

The Stingray Award-winner has worked for condos and hotels as a babysitter and housekeeper. Her tourism experiences began more than 30 years ago, she said.

“When I first started, I needed a job, and liked the thought of working alongside people of all nationalities,” she said. “I was very fortunate to work with people I liked and I enjoy my job of housekeeping. I take great pride in all that I do.

“I have a lot of great memories. Many guests have even asked me to even come back with them to their countries for a visit. I have got to know many guests that have come to Cayman over the years. I have never gone to visit however as I hate flying!”

She’s also met some famous faces over the years.

“I once met James Woods and shook his hand when I was working at Colonial Club,” she said. “He was a perfect gentleman. I had seen him in the movie The Onion Field so recognized him immediately.”

More choice

Ms. Finelli has worked at Sunshine Suites for the past six years. She said during the past three decades Cayman’s tourism product has changed quite a bit.

“There are a lot more hotels and condos in the market today than there were 30 years ago – more choice for people depending on what they are looking at and also better price ranges. You have the Ritz for the very wealthy and then you have Sunshine Suites for example which offers a more affordable option for people wanting to come and visit.”

And of course the long-serving tourism professional is more than qualified to comment on Cayman’s current status.

“We have to watch out about crime affecting our visitors. With the increase in crime, many people are questioning whether Cayman is still the safe place it used to be. This could affect our whole tourism industry and our jobs,” said the Stingray award winner, sagely.

For youngsters wanting to get into tourism, she said it is important to stay in school and get as much education as possible.

“Tourism is a great industry and you must always come to work with a smile and don’t forget the manners that your mother taught you,” she said. “A smile and manners go a long way to making guests feel at home. You are the face of Cayman. It’s a great industry to work in as one day is never the same as the next, and you meet fascinating people every day.”
