The Cayman Islands Cancer Society is organising a series of cancer awareness activities for health professionals and the general public at the weekend.
Every two years, the Cancer Society organises this event, called Conquering Cancer II – Let’s Fight Cancer Together this year.
Dr. Sook Yin, medical director of the Society, said, “Cancer is not selective and as health care providers, we are continuously waging the war on cancer. This weekend is the weekend of cancer awareness and CICS is committed to circulate as much information as possible throughout the community.”
On Friday, 9 September, speakers from Cayman and around the world will give talks and presentations at St. Matthew’s University for medical professionals and medical students. This begins at 5.30pm, followed by five presentations at 6.15pm. Attendees will receive three hours continuing education credit. Speakers will be Dr. Troy Gatcliffe from Baptist Health International, Dr. Carlos Suarez and Dr. Abner Landry from the Oncology Referral Network of America, Dr. Linda Lee from Johns Hopkins and Dr. Lynn Feun from the University of Miami.
The following day, those speakers will meet the public at a free event from 8.30am to 2pm at the Grand Cayman Marriott Beach Resort on West Bay Road.
The Society and its partners for the event, Baptist Health International, the Oncology Referral Network of America, John’s Hopkins and the University of Miami are inviting everyone to join them at this day of awareness and education, said Dr. Yin.
There will be 12 educational awareness sessions throughout the day, opportunities for members of the public to learn about their individual cancer risks and what they can do to lower it. Several booths will also be promoting cancer prevention, healthy lifestyles and other health-related services available in the Cayman Islands.
“The information passed on to health care providers and the public through these educational sessions will serve to keep the people up to date,” said Dr. Yin, who urged attendees to act on what they learn from the awareness sessions.
The Cayman Heart Fund will be carrying out general health screenings for BMI, cholesterol and glucose. Participants who want to avail of these tests should fast for at least 10 hours before the screenings.
There will also be vouchers for free Pap smears, mammograms and PSA blood tests for people who do not have health insurance coverage for these potentially lifesaving tests.
Refreshments will also be served throughout the day.
