Mark McNulty has been to many golf clubs in numerous countries over the years. However he had never been to the Cayman Islands.
That fact changed last weekend at the 14th annual Cayman Islands Red Cross golf tournament. McNulty, 57, along with legend Nick Price was the featured guest at the North Sound Golf Club. The Irish citizen, who was actually born in Zimbabwe and raised on a farm, states his impression of Cayman stretched beyond the golf course.
“This is my first time here and I heard a lot about Cayman,” McNulty said. “It’s one of the world’s capitals of banking and being a diver I always wanted to come here. The timing never worked out in the past but I’m glad I was able to come this time to help out a charity while doing my hobby.
“The North Sound course is no big deal for me. I’m not intimidated by it. I’ve competed at many golf courses in my career.”
Over 200 golfers took part in the competition. A number of notable faces were in attendance from Governor Duncan Taylor to Digicel head Victor Corcoran and top male golfer Joel Dodson. Aside from the action on the tees, the tournament featured clinics for youngsters and adults. McNulty states those sessions were encouraging.
“The time with the kids was fun, They went far in a short period of time and there’s some potential there.”
McNulty is an active member of the Professional Golfers Association Senior Tour. As such he has a number of competitions left on his schedule. His next event is slated to be the Songdo Championship in South Korea. That tournament (taking place 16-18 September) is in its second year, with the inaugural edition attracting 57 players competing for the top prize of US$455,000 on the Jack Nicklaus Golf Club Korea par-72 course in Incheon (a port city west of Seoul).
McNulty states the Korean event is on his mind now.
“I had fun in Cayman and I would like to come back on a vacation basis.
I’m going back home to Orlando, Florida on Monday. I have six tournaments left for the year and the next one is in Korea in a few days time.”
