Libraries, books and literacy all tie in with encouraging children to read, and to that end, Rotaract Blue members in East End recently donated nearly 800 books to the East End Public Library.
The members collected books from school, home, work, friends and Rotary clubs in the Cayman Islands. The project was so well received and supported by the community, organisers said, that Rotaract Blue will continue accepting donations through October.
Annie Clarke, librarian at the East End Public Library, said she was “amazed” by the number of donated books.
“We will be busy over the next few weeks sorting through the many varied books to ensure that visitors to the library will be able to access these .. which range from children’s storybooks to young adult fiction to memoirs of famous athletes,” she said.
Tundé McDonald, Rotaract Blue’s community service director, said, “This initiative was a simple way for Rotaract Blue to support literacy in the Cayman Islands.
“Worldwide, Rotary has made great strides in providing basic literacy skills in an effort to mitigate the many social and developmental ills that result from the lack of these skills. Rotaract Blue is proud to continue the efforts here in the Cayman Islands and make a positive difference in our community.”
