On 2-3 September, Royal Bank of Canada sponsored the 14th annual charitable golf tournament to benefit the Cayman Islands Red Cross.
The tournament exceeded all previous records, raising CI$63,000 through entry fees, hole sponsors and raffle items. More than 230 golfers participated in the event, which was held over two days and featured a four-man scramble format with a shotgun start.
“RBC has been the named key sponsor of this event since its inception in 1998, and each year, with the help of hardworking employees and volunteers, we manage to find new ways to make a more meaningful difference for the Red Cross,” said Jason Waters, vice president and country head of RBC in the Cayman Islands. “Our partnership with the Red Cross is important to RBC since it combines two of RBC’s priorities: giving back to the community and supporting activities and causes that are important to our clients and staff.”
This year, the golf tournament was billed as part of the local Red Cross’ “A September to Remember,” which commemorates the organisation’s 50th anniversary. Local dignitaries were on hand to open the tournament, including Deputy Governor Donovan Ebanks and Governor Duncan Taylor, who respectively hit the first balls on 2-3 September. Professional golfers Nick Price and Mark McNulty also participated in the tournament and sponsored clinics for both children and adults.
“Both pros provided outstanding golf techniques and took time to answer questions from the audience, which was very well received,” said Jondo Obi, Director of the Cayman Islands Red Cross. “We sincerely thank RBC and all of our sponsors for support of this event. We could not succeed without the combined efforts of all involved. The money raised will directly and immediately benefit our local programmes and activities.”
The event concluded with a prize-giving ceremony where the top five winning teams during the two days were acknowledged. Team Extreme (Robert Ebanks, Patrick Broderick, Robert Teofilo, Lito Returmban) took 1st prize. The following teams were awarded second through fifth-place prizes, respectively: Piccalos, Guily’s Gods, Caledonian Global Financial and RBC team No. 6.
As an added element of recognition, Price and McNulty awarded Mr. Peter Milburn with flag pin from Hole 14 of a professional golf tournament, in which they recently participated. “The flag represented the 14 years that Mr. Milburn has been organising the golf tournament, acknowledging his dedication, commitment and contribution to the success of the Red Cross,” Mrs. Obi said. “It was a very special way to recognise him, especially during the CIRC’s 50th anniversary year.”
Much of the success of this year’s tournament can be attributed to the sponsors of the event. RBC Royal Bank and RBC Wealth Management were the presenting sponsors for the CIRC’s “A September to Remember” events, which included the Golf Tournament and a 50th Anniversary Dinner/Dance.
“We sincerely thank all of our sponsors, golfers and volunteers for making this year’s tournament one of the biggest and best ever,” Mrs. Obi said. “Not only did it exceed our expectations, it was one of the biggest tournaments ever held at the North Sound Club. The positive response of the participants and sponsors was overwhelming. Thank you for making this September one to remember.”
