Runners will be hitting the road in the coming weeks to raise funds for the Breast Cancer Foundation.
The Lions Clubs of Tropical Gardens and Cayman Brac are organising a 5k walk on the Brac to raise funds for the Foundation.
Runners and walkers taking part in the Brenda Tibbetts Lund Memorial 5k Run will start from Scotts Dock, go to Foster’s Corner and come back. The run begins at 6am on Saturday, 24 September.
Later that day, a breast cancer awareness meeting will be held at the Aston Rutty Centre at 7.30pm.
Another 5k run in memory of Brenda Tibbetts Lund will be held in Grand Cayman on Saturday, 8 October at 6.30am.
Gala dinner
And once all that energetic running is over, it will be time to unwind and relax at the fourth annual Breast Cancer Gala Dinner at the Ritz-Carlton, Grand Cayman which will be held on 15 October.
The gala dinner, one of the most glamorous events in Cayman’s social calendar, is hosted by The Breast Cancer Foundation.
Each year, the silent auction plays an important part in the event’s fund raising. Several companies have already signed up to offer a wide array of items for bid, but organisers say more are always welcome.
Among the items up for grabs this year are a wine tasting from Blackbeard’s; dinner for six in your home from Mis En Place; a Cabachon black lace muse bag, silk jewel motif pink scarf and an 18k yellow gold diamond Leger necklace from Cartier; a Bellinis and Bikinis ultimate shopping experience from Sand Angels; a seven-night stay at Plantation Village; a two-night stay at Villas of the Galleon; a two-night stay at Brac Reef Resort; and a boat charter from Cayman Private Charter.
The silent auction also includes a $100 gift voucher from Luca; a $100 gift voucher from Ragazzi; a Sand Bar/Rum Point cruise for two and a dinner sail for two from Red Sail Sports; hair makeover and products from Pasquale; weighing scales from Icoa; a chess set from Beacon Furniture; and a one-night stay at Comfort Suites.
The first Breast Cancer Gala Dinner held in October 2008 was originally planned as a one time event, but it was so successful that the organisers Kim Lund and James Bovell of RE/MAX Cayman Islands made it an annual fundraiser.
The evening celebrates cancer survivors and raises funds for local non-profit organisations, including the Cayman Islands Cancer Society and the Lions Club of Tropical Gardens.
Last year’s gala included a keynote address and performance by opera luminary and “America’s Got Talent” star Barbara Padilla. The 2010 gala dinner raised more than $100,000.
“We are hoping to raise even more funds this year, which will enable us to help even more patients and to continue our support of breast cancer awareness and education,” said Mr. Lund, who along with Mr. Bovell is a director of the Foundation.
The 2011 Breast Cancer Gala Dinner begins at 6pm on 15 October with a champagne reception followed by a three-course meal. As well as both silent and live auctions, there will be dinner, dancing and more.
